Candlebury

Fenwold Museum

A town’s keepsakes, looked after when the visitors have gone.

The museum holds things that once belonged to Fenwold’s everyday life. A model preserves the old ferry after the real one has gone. A great shell has arrived with less of its history attached.

Barnaby Gostling’s night round takes him among the cases and cabinets. Miss Vokes has her own interest in the objects, and the evening leaves time to notice details that might be passed over by day.

Outside are the town, the bridge and the traces of other work: a mill, a timber yard, a vanished crossing. Inside, something as small as a model boat can keep a part of that world in view.
