Constable Dimmock, in his helmet and dark cape, stands in the lamplit Passage.

Constable Dimmock walks the high road on his night beat. He and Jonah Fenn have an unspoken arrangement: Dimmock notices the lamps, while Jonah notices the doors.

On the wet evening of The Lamplighter’s Round, he tells Jonah which lamps have gone out and warns him about a loose cobble by the saddler’s. He accepts that the dark lamp outside Jonah’s own home has been left for a reason.

His brother, Septimus Dimmock, is the verger of St Hilda’s in Little Tallowmere.
