Bellweather
& Sons
The horse sign hangs above the door.
Inside, there is always something worth a closer look.
Bellweather & Sons
Bartholomew Bellweather makes toys with his sons Edward and Henry. Above the door hangs a dappled-grey wooden horse, one front hoof raised. Boats hang over the window; smaller things reward a longer look.
Behind the shop are the bench, the stove and the possibilities drawer. A cracked marble, a brass handle, odd wheels and a doll’s teacup are all worth keeping until the right use comes along.
The work changes with the year. After Christmas come the yacht hulls, ready for rigging in March and sailing on the Round Pond from Easter. Bartholomew has been making little worlds since he and Dorothea were children.
