Ambrose’s cobbler’s shop

Number 42, Amberwick Passage, with a carved boot above the door.

Ambrose Peverell mends shoes at number forty-two. Shelves hold pairs waiting for collection, wooden lasts line the top shelf, and the counter is worn pale where customers rest their hands. His bench stands beneath a lamp, turned towards the window.

Clara’s dressmaking shop is across the Passage. She knows which leg of the chair beside his bench is short. In the box marked Sundries, Ambrose keeps a pair of dancing shoes; after their evening at the Three Lanterns, Jonah Fenn catches sight of him practising through the low workshop window.
